Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a complex mental health condition, characterized by extreme moods. This condition affects mood regulation, leading to periods of intense emotional highs and lows. These mood swings can significantly impact daily functioning, interpersonal relationships, and ability to uphold job responsibilities. The condition is divided into different types including bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia. Our providers are well-trained and experienced in recognizing, diagnosing, and treating all types of bipolar disorder. We offer in-person care at our office location in Tampa as well as telepsychiatry across the state of Florida.
Diagnosing and Treating Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar I is characterized by manic episodes that have a severe negative impact on the patient’s ability to function. Some manic episodes require hospitalization. Bipolar II is characterized by significant depressive episodes as well as hypomanic episodes. Cyclothymia has symptoms of both hypomania and depression, though does not meet full diagnostic criteria for bipolar I/II or major depressive disorder.
Bipolar disorder should only be diagnosed by a mental health professional. Our providers will conduct an extensive clinical interview, review family history and medical records, administer psychological screeners, and rule out other psychiatric diagnoses to accurately diagnose bipolar disorder.
Treatment for bipolar disorder typically includes medication management and psychotherapy. Support groups can also be helpful for bipolar individuals.
