Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) is a mental health condition characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions). For many individuals, OCD can take a significant toll on personal, social, and professional aspects of life. The constant cycle of obsessions and compulsions can be exhausting, leading to difficulties in relationships, work, and overall well-being. Dr. Greeter gave a thorough presentation on OCD presentation, treatment, and outcomes. A recording of this presentation is available on our website and on YouTube.

Common Symptoms and Treating OCD

The symptoms of OCD can vary widely from person to person. Obsessions are intrusive, distressing thoughts, images, or urges that cause anxiety. Common obsessions may include fears of contamination, harming others, or fears of making mistakes. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety or prevent a feared event. Common compulsions include hand washing, checking and rechecking, counting, or repeating actions until they “feel right.” Individuals with OCD may avoid situations or places that trigger obsessions or compulsions, further limiting their daily activities.

Our practice utilizes only evidence-based treatment plans for our patients with OCD. Specialized therapy such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) or Inference-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) has been shown to be effective for OCD and may be incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan. Our practice collaborates with skilled, respected practices that offer therapy for OCD in our area. Medications have been shown to be effective in OCD patients, especially if the symptoms are so severe they are impacting the progress made in therapy.

What makes our practice unique
